DRAGON BOATING ON THE BEAUTIFUL NARRABEEN LAGOON
6pm - 7pm
8am - 9.30am
A team of paddlers along with a drummer and steer person work together to paddle in unison in boat races over 200 and 500m, even up to 8km in competitions. Each training race is 2-3 minutes long. Dragon boating is a community sport where you can join in at all levels of fitness and experience. It's popularity is growing due to the social nature of the sport, as well as the ability to engage in exercise in a beautiful environment.
Based on the beautiful Narrabeen Lagoon, we are ideally situated for those on the Northern Beaches, Terrey Hills, Forestville and Frenchs Forest. Established in 1983 along with our sister club, Port Hacking, we are one of the first clubs in Sydney. Our membership is diverse with people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying this unique sport. We have fun training sessions twice a week, and our competitive paddlers race in regional, interstate and international events.
Dragon boat racing emerged in China as as far back as 2,500 years ago, in fishing communities along the Yangtze River in Southern-Central China. Originally a initially a folk ritual designed to appease the rain gods, it fell out of fashion during the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 60's but began a resurgence in 1976 when Hong Kong promoted it to attract tourists. Since then, dragon boating has grown into a global sport in over 60 countries.

Absolutely! In fact most of our club members have never done anything similar before coming along for their first paddle. Above all, we want everyone to have fun and we pride ourselves on our sociable community of Northern Beaches locals of all ages.
We provide all equipment - life jacket, paddle, boat and coaching! All you need to do is rock up (but maybe pack a towel in case you get a bit damp.
Not at all. In fact dragon boating is a great way to get fitter. Many of our paddlers have enjoyed different sports in the past, and have been looking for a fun and sociable way to get back in shape.
On arrival you will of course be introduced to our friendly members. You will then help to get the boats on the water and be given a briefing and paddling tips. You will be buddied up so that you have someone showing you the ropes. We'll paddle out onto the lagoon towards the beach, which fantastic at either end of the day when we hold our sessions. Sometimes we stop for a swim. On return to the club we'll hose the boats down and put them away.
We love welcoming new people into our club!
